Are you thinking about starting premarital counseling? Our QLC Counselors are dedicated to supporting you as you prepare for your marriage. Exploring important topics before marriage helps couples prevent future conflicts and pave the way for a deeply fulfilling marriage. Here is some information about how it works.

Premarital counseling usually includes 3-6 counseling sessions and addresses topics like communication, love languages, conflict resolution, emotional and sexual intimacy, finances, and childrearing. Please feel free to share with your counselor any issues that you’d like to address; this will enable us to tailor the sessions to your specific needs.

The following questions address many of the important topics that are covered in premarital counseling and the most common challenges that married couples have.

  • What are your feelings, thoughts, and beliefs about marriage? What is (was) your parents’ marriage like? How would you like your marriage to be?
  • Would you like to have children? If so, how many would you like to have? Would you like to adopt a child? Would you want to try IVF if your doctor recommended it? What needs to happen in order for you to feel ready to take these steps?
  • What are your expectations for your sexual relationship? How adventurous would you like to be? Do you want to be monogamous? How often would you like to have sex?
  • What are your feelings, thoughts, and values related to career and finances? How much income do you want to have as an individual and as a couple? What are your beliefs about saving, spending, philanthropy, and investments?
  • What are your religious and spiritual beliefs? Is it important that your partner share your beliefs? What are your expectations for involvement with a community of worship (i.e. church, mosque, synagogue, etc.)?
  • How much involvement with in-laws, extended family, and friends would you like to have? How frequently would you like to talk to, visit, or receive visits from your friends and families?
  • Where would you like to live? Do you see yourself settling down in one place or moving around? Are there certain places you would not want to live? Do you prefer a rural, urban or suburban setting?
